A growing number of celebrities abroad are crediting peptides as the secret behind their anti-aging routines. The ingredient has emerged as a functional compound spanning health supplements, beauty products, and the obesity and weight-loss market, drawing attention across the wellness industry.
Peptides are short protein chains made up of two to 50 amino acids linked together. They act as signaling molecules between cells and carry out a wide range of physiological functions. Because their molecular size is far smaller than that of full proteins, they are absorbed more quickly — a key advantage. Unlike conventional protein supplements, which have historically suffered from low absorption rates, peptides are digested and absorbed rapidly.
What thrust peptides into the spotlight in the global wellness market was the boom in GLP-1 — glucagon-like peptide-1 — drugs used to treat diabetes and obesity. Blockbuster drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic are GLP-1 receptor agonists, both peptide-based.
As awareness of peptides' benefits has grown, health food companies have been rolling out peptide-based products in quick succession. According to market research firm Data Bridge Market Research, the global peptide dietary supplement market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.5 percent between 2025 and 2032.
KOTRA's New York trade office said wellness companies are investing in building large-scale production systems for high-performance peptide ingredients and in developing new products. A prime example is Nuritas, a biotech company that developed Peptistrong, a peptide ingredient gaining traction in the market. It delivers muscle recovery benefits at lower doses than conventional whey protein. The product uses peptides that send signals to promote muscle protein synthesis while suppressing muscle breakdown.
Another example is Lactium, a milk protein hydrolysate peptide developed by French biotech firm Ingredia. It has been used as an ingredient in products tailored for stress relief and sleep support.
Product formats vary widely. Collagen peptide supplements are sold as powders, capsules, or ready-to-drink options, and are often mixed into coffee or smoothies.
Beyond ingestible supplements, peptides are also applied directly to the skin, with active use in skincare products. According to LGM Pharma, a global cosmetics and pharmaceutical ingredient developer, peptides that reach the skin stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.
One caution: because peptides come in a vast array of types with widely varying functions, the term risks being broadly misused in marketing. Nutritionists note that peptide supplements are not a cure-all — they cannot on their own address every concern from anti-aging and weight loss to diabetes prevention and skincare.
